The latest collection from the Claxton Studio, Vanitas, takes inspiration from a genre of still-life oil paintings of the 16th and 17th centuries in Flanders and the Netherlands. The compositions typically combined flowers from different countries and even different continents in one vase and at one moment of blooming.
Claxton’s long-time passion for exploring the delicate intricacies of the floral world has resulted in a collection that is both striking and fantastical. By using bold sweeping brush strokes together with a vibrant colour palette, Claxton’s artworks reveal enigmatic patterns hidden behind clusters of unfolding petals.
Colour is key for winter and dark backdrops with contrasting brighter hues of oil paint seen in the Vanitas paintings have influenced Claxton’s colour palette. Flame orange, berry reds, fuchsia pink, violet contrasting black and graphite tones are all important for her Winter 2016 collection.
Claxton is as comfortable in front of an easel or printing table as she is sketching on her Wacom Cintiq using the latest digital software. Her studio is a space where she combines these disciplines, flowing seamlessly between the physical and digital (often with rainbow dyed fingers and paint-freckled hair!) She uses the sewing machine as an alternative pencil and makes energetic marks with threads within her original oil paintings. Some of the flowers have been lavishly embellished using Swarovski crystals, beads and sequins.
