Artist Leanne Claxton blurs the lines between fashion and art with her stunning silk scarf designs that combine traditional art-house, painterly techniques and cutting edge technology.
“When you take a flower in your hand and really look at it, it’s your world for the moment. I want to give that world to someone else. Most people in the city rush around so, they have no time to look at a flower. I want them to see it whether they want to or not.”
The latest collection from the Claxton Studio, Art Of Flowers, takes inspiration from American artist Georgia O’keeffe and a nostalgic sentiment for the past.
“I found I could say things with colors that I couldn’t say in any other way – things that I had no words for.” Georgia O’Keeffe
The colours for Spring Summer 2017 are vibrant yet have some subtle neutral underlying tones. The palette aims to capture majestic wild summer flora and fauna surrounding an old summerhouse in Galicia, Spain.
Claxton is as comfortable in front of an easel or printing table as she is sketching on her Wacom Cintiq using the latest digital software. Her studio is a space where she combines these disciplines, flowing seamlessly between the physical and digital (often with rainbow dyed fingers and paint-freckled hair!) She uses the sewing machine as an alternative pencil and makes energetic marks with threads within her original oil paintings.
The Leanne Claxton digital scarf collection sees the artist’s dramatic oil paintings digitally transformed and printed to the highest possible quality and finish onto the finest fabrics. Each scarf starts life as a detailed graphite sketch that is then interpreted into an oil painting and screen print.
Claxton Bespoke scarves are hand-made in England. Each scarf is individually painted, treated, washed and hand finished. Bespoke scarves are a labour of love, and their individual marks and quirks ensure no two pieces are the same. This is a quintessential part of Claxton’s truly unique brand.
“Nobody really sees a flower – really – it is so small it takes time – we haven’t time – and it takes time.”
